What the two halves actually are
Above the worktop a dual-fuel range is a gas machine: the burners are fed by gas, while the ignition and the controls run on electricity. Below it the oven is electric, heated by elements rather than by a gas burner, and an electric oven holds and recovers heat in its own way, so advice written for the all-gas version of a range does not simply transfer. Doors, racks, lights and a convection fan are the same kind of hardware either way. On the wider models a griddle or a second cavity belongs to whichever half it sits in.
What it changes when something stops working
It narrows the first question. Burners that light normally while the oven stays cold prove the gas side every time a knob is turned, so the search moves to the electric half. A range that does nothing at all points at the supply instead, and a weak supply can show up as an oven that still heats but takes far longer than it used to. During a power cut the spark ignition has nothing to run on, so the range is out of use until the supply is back. Say which half is misbehaving when you ring, and the likelier parts travel out on the van.
